Webinar - Artificial Intelligence: It’s in Your Firm (Whether You Know It or Not) - 1.0 PDH (LA CES/non-HSW)
The time of AI is upon us. While many are not worried about this buzzword, many firms are embracing the technology and doing what they can to get ahead of what seems inevitable. During this session, we will examine what is going on with AI, what are people using, what can be done, and how will this impact our lives. We will examine the insurability ramifications, and privacy concerns the leveraging of AI may create. Finally, if you think your firm isn’t already leveraging this, you may be wrong. We will talk about strategies others have put in place to help manage internally and externally the use of the evolving technology.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of course participants will be able to:
Identify and explain applicable artificial intelligence systems for a design professional and how it impacts the firm’s every day.
Analyze the impacts the leveraging of artificial intelligence may have on the firm, with focus from a risk and liability point of view.
Evaluate and plan how you will leverage this technology while assessing the risk and heightened standard of care this may create.
Recognize the risk associated with the AI use and determine the situation in which each type should be used.
This webinar is free for members. Register today!

Webinar - 2025 Pulse Check: Business Strategies and Market Shifts in Landscape Architecture - 1.0 PDH (LA CES/non-HSW)

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear candid insights from leaders across the field and contribute your own perspective on what’s emerging, what’s shifting, and what’s next.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
Analyze how firm leaders are responding to economic conditions in 2025, including new business strategies, service pivots, and client engagement approaches.
Evaluate current challenges and solutions related to employee recruitment and retention, workplace culture, and emerging professional support.
Identify key shifts in construction costs, materials, and client priorities—and how firms are managing expectations, timelines, and project types in response.

Design is Blind
Design is Blind will NOT be your average mock interview setting, Networking event or Firm Presentation.
Firms will present themselves while cloaked in mystery to the audience. Each firm will be asked to present a single graphic with no name or logo to an audience of CDES students and professionals to see if they can guess who they are. The audience will have an opportunity to then ask questions before our final reveal. After the event, Design Student & Alumni Board (DSAB) will host a social hour outside of the auditorium for networking and conversation with refreshments, food, and snacks. (Open to all UMN students, recent graduates, and emerging professionals)
Individuals are encouraged to attend in-person; however, a Zoom link will be provided for the event.

Roger Martin Travel Prize Exhibition / Katie Kelly
NEW DATE / Event was rescheduled due to weather
This exhibition explores Japanese landscapes through drawing and printmaking, with an interest in “sites of memory.”
Taking inspiration from Pierre Nora’s “Lieux de mémoire,” the exhibition considers an expansive definition of the traditional memorial landscape, spaces that preserve or interpret memory, hold trauma, transform through cultural practice, celebrate the everyday, and transcend time.
Katie Kelly is a senior associate at TEN x TEN and the 2023-2024 Roger Martin Travel Prize Fellow, a prize created to honor the legacy of Roger Martin and his love of travel and drawing. Kelly’s work will be on display around the courtyard in Rapson Hall from March 5 through April 30, 2025. A public reception with Katie will take place on Wednesday, March 5, at 6 PM. All are welcome!
-
The Martin Travel Prize is awarded annually to a landscape architect to help early career professionals pursue foreign or domestic travel as a means to further their professional development and enhance their understanding of diverse cultural perspectives, varied aesthetic expressions, and differing responses to local environments and technical solutions to environmental problems. This fellowship, made possible by generous donations, is facilitated by the Martin Fellowship Committee, the UMN Department of Landscape Architecture, and the Minnesota Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
-
The Martin Travel Prize is awarded through an annual, competitive selection process. The competition runs through March and the winner is selected and announced in April. Applications for the next round are due at noon on March 13, 2025. Learn more about rules and eligibility and view blogs from past recipients here.

CEU and a Beer
Join us for this educational session “Design Essentials for Outdoor Landscape Lighting” hosted by JTH Lighting and B-K Lighting and get 1 CEU along with complimentary beverages and snacks!
This session will cover the three primary components of lighting design: “Why”, “What” and “How”. The “Why” portion, considered the most important, discusses the reasons why people want/need light. It teaches designers how to ask key questions to help uncover the wants and needs of their prospects and just as importantly, how to listen. The answers uncovered during this discovery phase acts as a basis and foundation for the lighting design and directs the designer to address the “What” and “How”. The “What” portion teaches the lighting designer how to interpret the site and identify key landscape and architectural elements worthy of lighting that not only enhances the aesthetic but satisfies the needs of the client; in other words, satisfies the “Why”. The “How” portion covers specific lighting techniques commonly used by lighting professionals to illuminate landscape and architectural elements. While several techniques can potentially be used to light a given element, the importance of satisfying client needs will be emphasized. The selection of specific fixture types based on the intended lighting technique desired will also be discussed. Additionally, we will discuss the importance of color in any professionally designed lighting project and the use of lighting accessories designed to help the lighting professional manipulate light output. This class will be interactive in nature, encouraging questions throughout.
