Landscape Architect
The Landscape Architect develops accurate and creative landscape solutions tailored to various site conditions and client preferences. This role involves meeting clients, guiding them through the design process from concept to completion, maintaining client communication, and managing project timelines, budgets, and quality standards. Responsibilities include site analysis, preparing construction documents, and coordinating with interdisciplinary teams to deliver cohesive projects.
Required Experience, Education, Certification, & Licensure
● Minimum of 5 years of experience overseeing projects from design to completion. ● Professional degree (Bachelor’s or higher) in Landscape Architecture from an accredited program.
● Professional licensure in Landscape Architecture in Minnesota (required).

Roles & Responsibilities
Client Engagement
● Meet with clients to understand objectives and develop creative landscape design ideas. ● Prepare, present, and sell design deliverables to clients and builders.
● Maintain and develop client and builder relationships.
Project Management
● Lead planning and design for multiple projects concurrently.
● Ensure quality control throughout all phases of design development.
● Coordinate with builders, architects, engineers, and vendors to achieve project goals. ● Efficiently manage time and priorities throughout the creative process.
Design & Development
● Conduct site evaluations, analyze potential, and ensure regulatory compliance. ● Create compelling conceptual landscape plans with appropriate layout and flow. ● Prepare detailed construction documents and specifications, including:
○ Base plans
○ Grading and drainage
○ Planting and lighting plans
○ Site details
● Demonstrate knowledge of:
○ Horticulture and plant identification
○ Landscape features such as patios, retaining walls, pools, kitchens, pergolas, lighting, and water features.
● Work through design iterations and produce creative, attractive designs in various styles. ● Create comprehensive landscape project estimates using LMN software.
Additional Responsibilities
● Utilize aerial imagery, surveys, and online mapping tools for property data collection. ● Maintain knowledge of building regulations, municipal codes, conservation regulations, and MnDNR restrictions.
● Network and develop industry relationships through events, peer groups, and conferences. ● Participate in staff and interdisciplinary team meetings to organize workloads and assignments. ● Assist in business development activities and attend internal training and weekly scheduling meetings.
Work Environment
● Typical office setting with frequent interaction with staff and clients.
● Routine travel within the seven-county metro area.
● Deadlines typically fall within normal business hours, supporting work-life balance. Physical Requirements
● Prolonged periods of sitting, typing, and viewing digital or written materials, with occasional interruptions.
Compensation & Benefits

Landscape Architect
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Facilities Management is a department within University Services which is composed of the departments and people who deliver the non-academic operations across the University of Minnesota system. Facilities Management (FM) is responsible for all buildings, grounds and the energy management needs of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. Facilities Management works to provide a safe, reliable and welcoming campus in support of the University’s mission of teaching, research and outreach. FM’s responsibilities include over 25 million square feet in more than 280 buildings across 1200 acres in the Twin Cities.
Landcare is an operations unit within Facilities Management, responsible for campus design and maintenance. This position designs landscaping projects, manages landscape project installations, coordinates campus mitigation and restoration activities related to construction, manages campus assets, and directs daily activities of student assistants.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Designs landscaping projects – 35%
· Assists design staff with development of conceptual designs, drawings and illustrations
· Develops detailed landscape plans and specifications from conceptual designs
· Generates detailed quantity take-offs, cost estimates and project budgets
· Negotiates with customers regarding budget and design intent when appropriate
Manages landscape project installations – 25%
· Schedules labor and equipment resources and vendors activities to achieve project deadlines
· Solicits price quotes and competitive bids from vendors
· Purchases materials and coordinates delivery for project installations
· Provides direction in the field when necessary
· Inspects work to ensure compliance with design intent and University standards
Coordinates construction mitigation and restoration activities – 20%
• Collaborates with project teams to establish campus protection expectations and procedures
• Inspects project sites to enforce campus protection procedures
• Coordinates site restoration services including scheduling staff and vendors
• Inspects site restoration work to ensure compliance with University standards
Manages campus assets – 10%
• Collects and processes field data for Landcare layers in campus GIS
• Assists in developing maps necessary for maintenance operations
• Assists with yearly plant replacement initiative
• Assists in developing site-specific management plans
Assists with directing daily activities of design students – 10%
• Trains students in department procedures and standards
• Prioritizes and schedules student tasks
• Oversees student work
Physical and environmental requirements
Work is performed primarily in an office setting but also involves frequent visits to campus, including construction sites. Flexible work arrangements may be considered following successful completion of the one-year probation period. Proper PPE will be provided and must be worn in designated construction areas. This is a 100% time Civil Service position.
Qualifications
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Required (minimum) qualifications
Accredited degree in landscape architecture and two years of experience in project design implementation (or equivalent combination of education and experience); proficiency with AutoCAD, ArcMap, Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft Office software.
Preferred qualifications
Four years of experience in site/landscape project design and implementation and professional registration as a landscape architect.
Pay and Benefits
Pay Range: $28.26 hr- $46.63/hr ; depending on education/qualifications/experience
