PORCH - An Architecture of Generosity

TEN x TEN

Award Year / 2026

Entry Category / General Design

Location / Venice, Italy

Commissioned by the United States Department of State, the United States Pavilion at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia reimagines the American porch as a civic instrument—a landscape and an architecture of encounter, generosity, and climate intelligence. Framed as a symbol of national character, this contemporary manifestation of the porch is social, performative, generous, and democratic. “Porchness” is embodied in the edges, revealed ground, and simple organization of spaces designed to foster cultural exchange, daily encounters, and shared public life, reclaiming the porch as an enduring infrastructure of gathering, creativity, and resilience.
