George Morrison Memorial Overlook

Aune Fernandez Landscape Architects

Award Year / 2026

Entry Category / Small Budget/Big Impact

Location / Grand Marais, MN

On the North Shore of Lake Superior, Grand Marais is a community incredibly connected to the arts, with deep pride for one of its most distinguished artists, George Morrison (1919-2000). Morrison’s assemblages of wood-abstracted landscapes evocative of sky and water-inspired the landscape architect’s design for a Memorial Overlook in his honor. Community support for the overlook grew as the project itself grew beyond the initial plaque envisioned. The structure is a gateway framing the horizon and featuring extrapolated joinery from one of Morrison iconic works in open panels that cast the forms of his landscape across the space.
